Responsible automation

What business processes should not be automated with AI?

The best question is not “can AI do this?” It is “should AI do this on its own, or should a person decide?”

Keep consequential judgement explicit

If a decision could seriously affect someone's money, rights or wellbeing, make sure a responsible person stays involved.

Do not confuse explaining with changing

An AI that can explain an account policy should not automatically be allowed to change account details. Finding information, making a change, asking for approval and passing a task to a person are different things.

Identity changes the architecture

If private customer or business information is involved, the right person must be authorised before AI shows it or changes anything.

Exceptions deserve their own path

Plan for when something unexpected happens. A useful assistant should know when to stop and ask a person for help.

Automation should earn its place

If a simpler workflow is safer, clearer or cheaper, that may be the better answer. The goal is a better business outcome, not maximum automation.
